Always Kiss Me Goodnight: Instructions on Raising the Perfect Parent by 147 Kids Who Know. Compiled by J. S. Salt Published by Crown Trade Paperbacks Yeah, it's sappy. It's "warm and funny," just like the hype on the back cover suggests. But it will make you smile, it will make you think, it will probably make you want to go give your kids a hug. This little book is a collection of simple demands from kids, re-printed in their own hand-writing, some with pictures. Stuff like, "Tell me what I did right," and "Don't lie to me." My favorite is, "Try to play football with me, dad. Mom is not great. "Nothing earth shattering, just a lot of very gentle, and not so subtle, reminders of what we're supposed to be doing listening to our children. Always Kiss Me Good-Night is a nice little gift book, something to leave on the top of the bathroom reading pile, something to pick up and leaf through once a day.
Mousetracks: A Kids Computer Idea Book By Peggy L. Steinhauser Published by Tricycle Press
Kids and computers seem to go together. It is somehow scary to see how fast kids get the hang of a mouse, and learn to navigate their way through software. They just seem born to it. Mousetracks can help them put all of that apparently innate skill to some creative use. Working with any graphics or word processing software, on any computer, Mousetracks is full of ideas for things to make, like stationery and greeting cards, games to play, puzzles, coloring books, and more. Additionally, kids will be inspired to move beyond the projects suggested in the book, and come up with their own ideas.
Starting with some basics, like defining terms and manipulating shapes, the book quickly moves on to explore a wealth of creative fun. Kids will be learning to use these programs, usually reserved for adults, and they'll be mastering basic computer skills as well. The best thing about it is that all of these ideas don't require the purchase of additional software. Chances are you have, or have access to, the graphics or word processing software already. All you need is Mousetracks, and off you go.
The Male Homemaker's Handbook (Or Never Kiss A Kid Who's Just Eaten A Toad) by Tom Pinnock Published by WildStone Media.
Tom Pinnock writes a humorous account about his three months "On The Job" Most of his vignettes center around his cooking skills. One of the funniest is when he meets up with the fire department at the donut shop after attempting to cook breakfast one morning. Mr. Pinnock does a good job capturing the two most significant aspects of "the job" It is more difficult than it looks, but you do get to relive some of your own childhood. Tom Wars is a classic. To order The Male Homemakers Handbook contact Wildstone Media, 1-800-296-1918 $10.00 Book; $12 tapes ($3 s&h)
