Super Kids in 30 Minutes a Day

By Karen u. Kwiatkowski

What a novel idea: a book about raising happy, healthy well-rounded children that doesn't forget the fact that happy and healthy parents are an important part of the equation.

The author is an Air Force officer with four children who's husband has been the full-time dad for the last nine years. The family has moved quite frequently over the years, and this perhaps has encouraged Ms. Kwiatkowski to become so organized.

The book is unique in it's set up. Each chapter-Nurturing, Learning At Home, Supporting Your Schools, etc., offer a collection of quick to digest tips, spelling out in simple detail the time (and dollar) investment of each idea, and giving examples and resources. For instance, in the Learning At Home chapter, you'll find Art Everywhere. The time cost is none, and the dollar cost is zero to $200 per year. The idea is to encourage art as an everyday pursuit, not something relegated to specific times of day or week. Suggestions are to encourage kids to notice art all around them, in magazines and library books, to post your kids creations around the house, take them to galleries and plays, poke through flea markets and yard sales for art, and generally create a climate of creativity and acceptance of art. Quite a few pamphlets, books, magazines and organizations are listed at the end of the section.

Super Kids is a handy reference, not the kind of book you'll sit down and read through. It's a book to keep handy for inspiration and support. It is the voice of experience and is eminently practical.
