Astronauts

I saw my first astronaut
on a grainy motel television,
and I danced
on the bed until my dad
told me to stop.
He wanted to be an astronaut,
so he showed me moon rocks,
and the tiniest charred space capsule.
Such small relics
for sometthing so monumental:
hurtling through space,
those astronauts felt God's breath
and lived to return to earth.
I still wait for Dad's splashdown,
he's been gone so long
and everytime I see a shooting star
I think it's him --
crossing the face of God.

Trout, Dad and the Lone Ranger

You drove to the curve in the road
where a huge rock stood above the creek.
Shaded by sycamore trees,
the pool below silently swirled with trout.

Hunched over in concentration, you sat
while I smeared bait on the granite
and tangled my line.

Soon, I was jumping on rocks
and you asked me not to scare the fish,
so I cooled myself in shallow water
until you distant voice called me.

As we left, you laid the poles and the tackle box
next to the cooler of fish in the trunk,
and we listened to the Lone Ranger on the radio.

Just past the bridge, a policeman pulled us over
and you cursed quietly after he left.

The smell of orange blossoms washed over us
in the fading light
and the Lone Ranger rode off with Tonto
as I ended my perfect day with you.

B W Robertson is 36 years old, and lives in Las Vegas, Nevada with my wife of two years, Jennifer. We don't have any children yet, but we definitely plan on it.
I've been writing since I was nine years old. My dad died of cancer 16 years ago, and has inspired some of my poetry. Although I write autobiographically,
I hope others can relate to the subject and style. I have also written several one-act plays.

I'm working on my Master's degree in education at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and plan on teaching elementary school.
You can contact BW at
ImBrhino@aol.com and tell him how much you like his work.

If you have a story that you think others would be interested in please send it a long to us. We'd love to hear from you.
