Last
year the National Men's Health Foundation received over three hundred inquiries
from both public and private organizations about the initiatives behind National Men's
Health Week. Participation in the 1997 campaign included one-on-one patient
discussions, dissemination of men's health literature, hosting health seminars that
focused on men's health, and organizing mini-triathlons that promoted men's health and
fitness. The following are just a few of the creative, informative and entertaining ways
that companies, hospitals, associations and individuals promoted the National Men's
Health Week message.
Tanner Medical Center, Carrollton, GA
Although this was their first year participating in National
Men's Health Week, the Tanner Medical Center went all out. They held community
seminars covering such issues as cancer and heart disease prevention, impotence, and the
importance of regular preventive maintenance. They promoted the seminars with radio and
newspaper advertisements, press releases, direct mail invitations to men aged 50+, and
distributed flyers and Men's Maintenance Manuals to select doctors, health clubs
and companies in the area. With the profound draw, success of the program, and demand from
many interested men, a waiting list had to be created. The evaluations of the program were
excellent and demonstrated the need and desire for programs focused on men's health
issues. 89 % of the men indicated an interest in "men only" programs. In
addition to promoting the seminar, they had posters, table tents and flyers for all of
their employees in the hospital. Every male employee received a flyer and a Men's
Maintenance Manual through interoffice mail.
William Newton Memorial Hospital, Winfield, KS
During National Men's Health Week Healthways, a
division of William Newton Memorial Hospital, offered health screenings to the local
community, as well as 40 of the surrounding communities. A few of the activities offered
were PSA (prostate specific antigen) screenings and a Lipid Panel which included
cholesterol, HDL and LDL cholesterol, and triglyceride level screenings for all men
interested in understanding the prevention of prostate cancer and total health. They
distributed the Men's Maintenance Manual to all who attended, along with the men's health
fact sheet and a list of suggested readings in relation to men's health.
Wyoming Valley Health Care System, Plains, PA
In recognition of National Men's Health Week, Wyoming
Valley Health Care System sponsored a health fair offered to the entire community. The
health fair, titled "Just For Men, and those who care about them," was a
wonderful success. It was filled with a variety of information booths, screenings, and
door prizes. Some of the activities at the fair included: weight, blood pressure and pulse
screenings; along with vision, hearing and pulmonary screenings and a heimlich
demonstration. A special presentation by Dr. Roger Landry offered participants a chance to
learn how to change their lifestyles and improve the quality of their life. Everyone
received a bag filled with information on preventive health, including the Men's
Maintenance Manual, as well as many other goodies.
Levi Strauss & Co., San Francisco, CA
The Prevention Safety and Health department at Levi Strauss
& Co. distributed Men's Maintenance Manuals to each of their 2,200 employees.
The recipients were urged to look through the materials for their own use, or to pass it
on to someone they knew who would benefit from the materials. Throughout National Men's
Health Week tent cards were displayed in each of the men's restrooms to help promote
the importance of men's health.
Minneapolis Athletic Club, Minneapolis, MN
The coordinator at the Minneapolis Fitness Club was more
than delighted to participate in National Men's Health Week stating, "National
Men's Health Week aided us in educating hundreds of our members." Throughout National
Men's Health Week, the Minneapolis Athletic Club provided free fitness testing, blood
pressure readings and body composition testing, along with other activities offering
additional information on men's nutrition. They hung the posters, displayed the table tent
cards and offered each of their members the Men's Maintenance Manual. They used the health
quiz included in the materials sent to them, and had their members complete them as entry
forms to win a free nights stay in the club hotel.
United States Postal Service Headquarters, Washington, DC
The United States Postal Service Headquarters Health
Promotion Program recognized National Men's Health Week for the first time in 1997.
During the week they played video tapes outside the fitness center on a variety of topics,
such as: heart attacks, the importance of exercise, and cholesterol. They were able to
distribute the promotional materials throughout the entire building by placing the table
tent cards in the cafeteria, as well as posting a men's health fact sheet on the
cafeteria's bulletin board. They created a display in recognition of National Men's
Health Week including a banner, poster, brochures on suggested screenings at their
fitness center, and Men's Maintenance Manuals. In addition, they distributed a flyer
throughout the company with a quiz for men to complete and return to the fitness center.
If the men were able to answer five questions correctly, they were then entered into a
drawing to win a men's health encyclopedia.
Columbus Community Hospital, Columbus, TX
The Columbus Community Hospital and Columbus Health &
Fitness Center teamed up to celebrate National Men's Health Week with their first
annual Men's Fitness Challenge and Mini Health Fair. The events were promoted by newspaper
and radio advertisements, interviews, and visiting speakers at two men's civic clubs
during the week. Men ages 30-50 competed in the Fitness Challenge Triathlon that included
workouts on the treadmill and stairmaster, plus a basketball shoot-out. Men over 50
competed in a shorter treadmill workout and a putting contest. In addition to a great
workout, participants received a free T-shirt and drink cooler. The top three winners were
awarded Health & Fitness Club memberships and a trophy for their superior efforts. The
mini Health Fair featured PSA screening, blood pressure checks, stroke awareness,
endurance testing and cardiovascular training. In addition, everyone in attendance was
given health disease information, and Men's Maintenance Manuals.
Wright-Patterson Airforce Base, Ohio
In recognition of National Men's Health Week, The
Department of the Airforce at Wright-Patterson Airforce Base in Ohio, devoted one full day
to men's health. They offered free cholesterol screenings, body fat measurements, strength
and flexibility testing/weight training, vision screenings and a low fat food
demonstration. The high point of the day was the lecture series conducted by their medical
center physicians. Three-hundred men attended the lecture series which included eleven
topics ranging from Anti-oxidants and Heart Disease to Common Cancer Problems in Men.
Physicians Health Plan, Kalamazoo, MI
Physicians Health Plan is a unique company that provides a
variety of health promotion activities for the members they serve. In the Summer of 1997
they coordinated two "wellness fairs" for a manufacturing company that they
represent. With the majority of the employees consisting of men between the ages of 20-64,
they decided to incorporate National Men's Health Week into the wellness fairs. The
fair provided information on prostate exams/PSA testing, cardiovascular disease
management, sports and nutrition, testicular self exams, the importance of regular
physical exams for men, facts on men's health, as well as the Men's Maintenance Manuals.
Throughout National Men's Health Week, Physicians Health Plan set up similar displays in
their own offices, distributing all of the same materials that were included in the
previous wellness fairs, for the benefit of their own employees.
National Men's Health Week focuses on
a broad range of health issues impacting men from heart disease to prostate cancer to
testicular cancer to colon cancer and provide men and their families with vital
information to help them better understand these unique male problems and confront them
with pro-active health actions.
