Dads and Kids Cookin Together

Apple Crisp

Fall just wouldn’t be fall without apples--whether you pick your own or buy them at the supermarket or a local farm stand! Introduce the taste of baked apples with this All-American favorite dessert. The vanilla yogurt topping adds a tangy twist and extra calcium.


Makes 6 servings.

Prep time: 20 minutes
Cooking time: 30 minutes


Ingredients:

CRISP:
4 cups sliced apples with peel (about 4 medium apples)
½ cup brown sugar
½ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup oats
¼ cup butter
¾ tsp ground cinnamon
¾ tsp ground nutmeg

TOPPING:
1 ½ cups lowfat vanilla yogurt
substitute frozen yogurt or ice cream if desired


1. CHILD STEP: Gather ingredients and utensils (except sharp knives) that are within child’s reach
PARENT STEP: Gather ingredients, sharp utensils and utensils that child cannot reach.
2. CHILD STEP: Turn dial on oven to “bake” and 375°. Have parent check. Grease 8 x 8 x 2-inch pan.
3. CHILD STEP: Wash apples.
PARENT STEP: Core and cut apples into ¼-inch slices.
CHILD STEP: Arrange apples in greased baking pan.
4. PARENT STEP: Microwave butter in medium-size bowl.
CHILD STEP: Measure remaining ingredients into the bowl with the melted butter. Mix until blended. Sprinkle over apples.
5. PARENT STEP: Bake about 30 minutes or until topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. Serve in individual bowls and top with vanilla yogurt.
