| 1 medium spaghetti squash (about 2 pounds) | |
| 1 1/2 tablespoons butter | |
| Water | |
| Salt and pepper to taste |
| 1. | Wash squash. | ||
| 2. | PARENT STEP: | Cut squash in half. | |
| 3. | CHILD/ PARENT STEP: |
Scoop out as many seeds as possible with a large spoon. Have an adult help to remove remaining seeds. |

| 4. | CHILD/ PARENT STEP: |
Place each half in a 13 x 9 x 2-inch baking dish with water (enough to cover the bottom of the pan). Dot with butter. |

| 5. | CHILD/ PARENT STEP: |
Cover with aluminum foil. Bake in 350° F oven for 40 minutes or until tender. Let squash cool enough to complete the next step. |

| 6. | Use a fork and scrape the inside of each half so that it comes out like spaghetti. Do this until all the squash is scraped from the inside of each half. | ||
| 7. | PARENT STEP: | Place squash spaghetti strands in a casserole. Warm as needed in microwave oven. Toss with cheese or your favorite pasta sauce. | |

Although squash is available
all year long, it's most flavorful in the fall. Kids often like winter squash for its
sweet taste. Look for a squash that feels heavy and that has a hard, tough rind, deep
color, and no soft spots.
